Život
Bakalářský titul z fyziky získal na univerzitě v Sussexu v roce 1966 o rok později obdržel magisterský titul z astronomie rovněž v Sussexu a doktorát z astrofyziky získal na univerzitě v Cambridgi roku 1971.
