Zabývá se především astrofyzikou, kvantovou fyzikou a teorií prostoru-času. Vystudoval matematiku na University College London a získal doktorát z teoretické fyziky na University College London. Davies je autorem mnoha populárně naučných knih, ve kterých se zabývá otázkami vesmíru, životem, kvantovou fyzikou a filosofií vědy. Mezi jeho nejznámější knihy patří "Bohemian Mechanics", "Superforce: The Search for a Grand Unified Theory of Nature" a "The Mind of God: The Scientific Basis for a Rational World". Davies se také stal spoluzakladatelem a ředitelem Astrobiology Center na Arizonské univerzitě, kde se zabývá možností existence života mimo Zemi. Je členem Královské společnosti a za svou práci obdržel mnoho ocenění, včetně Templetonovy ceny. Vedle své vědecké práce píše také do novin a časopisů a vystupuje v televizi a rádiu, kde popularizuje vědu a diskutuje o otázkách existence a smyslu života.
